For about the past 6 months on and off I've been plagued with chrome or firefox taking forever to load YouTube and some other Flash based websites/videos or they time out/crash. Best I have been able to do is narrow it down that it seems to be consistent on computers running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 and yet not a lot of info out there on a fix (doesn't happen to me on XP or MacOSX using Google Chrome). There never seems to be a problem accessing these sites via Internet Explorer which is not my first choice of browser. The problem is as a Google Apps / Gmail power user I'm somewhat tied to using Google Chrome as my main browser (and still prefer it).
Now if I think of it, I open any video related links in IE but that can be a pain as most links I come across are via newsletters (and not always obvious they are flash/video content) and they will by default open in Chrome no matter what I have set as my default browser. I have found an acceptable workaround for this problem using 2 specific extensions in Google Chrome:
1. "FlashFree" extension. This chrome extension prevents flash related content on websites from initially loading. For sites you know you don't have an issue with you can easily add them to a "white list" so they are not blocked in future visits or can be unblocked for just that visit if you're not sure. To add this extension visit this LINK
2. "IE Tab Multi (Enhance) extension. This is where the workaround really happens. This extension allows you to run Microsoft Internet Explorer within Google Chrome. Once installed you need to adjust options to enable the "AutoURL pattern" and add entries such as http://*.youtube.com/* then anytime you access a YouTube related link the IE Tab automatically loads it. This has made a huge difference in preventing the "oh damn it - it is a youtube link / site" hazard and prevents the wait for it to load or get an error; but now with this extension any YouTube links I visit automatically go to an IE session within Chrome and the world is at peace again! Hopefully someday Google fixes this issue but for now you want this extension -- LINK
