SPECIAL EDITION: JULY 9th MALWARE WARNING
There has been a lot of buzz today in the news and on social networks about the DNS Changer malware that may kill your internet access on Monday July 9th. We've had a number of clients contact us today asking us if they are safe. It is unfortunately not possible to answer that question as you could already be infected as far back as November 2011 when the FBI seized a bunch of rogue DNS servers (Domain Name System). What this malware did/does is change your DNS settings on your computer and possibly your router (if you never secured the password). Why this is so bad as to put it simply, everywhere you go on the internet goes through a DNS Server. When you go to www.polarverse.com a DNS server directs you to the proper IP address (like a postal code does with an address) but if you're going through a rogue DNS server you could be taken to a malicious or fake website and worse block you from certain websites where you might download fixes or patches to get rid of the malware.
